At a splashy event in San Francisco on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, the Facebook-owned photo service announced it will begin allowing users to upload videos up to one hour in length, up from the previous one-minute limit. And to house the new longer-form videos from content creators and the general public.

Instagram is a social networking app made for sharing photos and videos from a smartphone. Similar to Facebook or Twitter, everyone who creates an Instagram account has a profile and a news feed.

When you post a photo or video on Instagram, it will be displayed on your profile. Other users who follow you will see your posts in their own feed. Likewise, you’ll see posts from other users whom you choose to follow. Instagram marketing has already marked its place in social media paradigm.

Instagram is a trendy app that has recently hit the milestone of being a global community of 1 Billion monthly active users. It’s been around for a few years, quietly picking up traction mostly thanks to everybody’s new obsession with mobile photography, and now the Instagram has been focusing particularly on videos too.

The video is a way we hang out with friends and we pass the time but how we watch it is changing. Teens are now watching 40% less TV than they did 5 years ago. And on Instagram, people watching 60% more video just the last year. So how we watch is changing quickly but what we watch is changing too. An entirely new category of video now exists and it’s being made by creators.

Teens might be watching less TV but they’re watching more creators online and the number of creators has grown exponentially.”

Combined, these creators reach hundreds of millions of followers and that makes Instagram one of the largest and most engaged audiences anywhere in the world.

Do We Need To Upgrade?

All of this change is super exciting but we think there are a handful of problems. The tools we watch the video are old and outdated. Think about it, today we still watch videos formatted for a TV on a vertical screen which means we either have to rotate our phone awkwardly or watch a tiny little version and that doesn’t make much sense, does it? That’s not all, video on mobile is also clunky and unnatural.

Current apps make you search or browse a directory to find things you like. When was the last time you had to turn on the TV and then had to type to search just to start watching? Even once you know what you want to watch, the results can be really overwhelming.

How can you find all the good stuff among all the cat videos and everything else? Where are the creators that you guys love? All of these problems made Instagram think that you deserve better and it’s time for the video to move forward and to evolve.

So how can Instagram make this better for their community of 1 billion? Whatever we do it has to be mobile first, since this is on your phone, Search should be built with your phone in mind. Next, it has to be simple, They have a saying in Instagram which is to do one thing and one thing really well, finally quality. In a world of overwhelming choice, you want the best videos not just all videos. So following these 3 principles, Instagram built something brand new, calling it IGTV. IGTV is a brand new experience inside of the main Instagram app and it’s also a new dedicated standalone app so the first thing you’ll notice when you first enter IGTV is that everything is made for how you naturally hold your phone. Videos play full screen and there’s no wasted space.


Duration Limit

Videos are not restricted to the same one minute limit that you are used to on Instagram. Have you ever come across one of those 30-second preview videos in your feed and it kind of just leaves you wanting more sort of leaves you hanging? No more of that on IGTV because everything is longer, you get to see the full thing.



Another thing you will notice with IGTV is that its dead simple. The moment you open the app you’re already watching all the content you love from all the creators you love.

IGTV also presents the highest quality content for me. when I want to discover new creators, I just swipe around to check out the channels. You can easily browse and also follow the creator to watch more videos as they upload.
